AUDREY

"Swedish four-piece Audrey formed in 2002 and started performing gigs in April of the same year. Having recorded a demo in the studio of an artist’s collective in Gothenburg in the summer of 2003, the positive responses were immediate. During the summer and autumn they played more shows, selling over 500 demos in the process.

Moving forward a year or so, Audrey began to develop their sound. The embryo of their dark, suggestive pop took its first form in a run-down music house in the archipelago of Gothenburg. "It was really the worst place, the building was about to be demolished as we rehearsed there. The toilet was broken, the pipes had frozen and there were mice running around on the floor", says guitarist Victoria Skoglund.

Describing Audrey’s music is no easy task. If the group has succeeded in finding a central theme, it’s a balance in the melodies - shimmering, beautiful moments of pop meet dark sadness.

The harmonies (everyone in the group shares vocal efforts) shift quickly between keys and moods. Straightforward, conventional narrative is replaced by abstract meanings which strengthen the melodies. "I like it when the lyrics can mean different things, that we give clues to our audience. Sometimes we can write quite incoherent things, but we are looking for a feeling in the music", says Victoria."

THE JOKE

On a pu connaître la scène lyonnaise au travers de son immense activité noise et punk expérimental, hardcore, puis high energy et garage. Voici un groupe s’inspirant du courant post punk né à la toute fin des 70’s, qui connut la gloire dans les 80’s et porta entre autres les noms de new et cold wave. Ce courant semble connaître un revival actuellement. Du rock racé avec des ambiances teintées d’un spleen urbain primordial, la simplicité du punk rock avec une énergie plus intellectuelle. Voilà ce qu’il convient de venir découvrir sans faute pour parfaire sa culture et explorer le temps.

RAYMONDE HOWARD

Raymonde Howard c'est le projet solo intimiste de salon de madame Raymonde, l'une des guitares et chant des groupes Kiss Kiss Martine et La Seconda Volta. Suite à l'acquisition d'un 4 pistes YAMAHA MT1-205, Raymonde a laissé un micro en marche, enregistré tout ce qui passait entre ses mains, et fait vivre de nombreuses cassettes SONY. Morceaux de 20 secondes ou de 8 minutes, guitares saturés ou bontempi, boites à rythme ou batterie, a cappella ou instrumental, pas de régle, pas de blablah un projet exutoire dont voilà le résultat.

Une chronique de la démo de Raymonde Howard "s/t" (sortie en 2006 sur Angry Ballerina Records) sur next clues.com:

"C’est une démo ça ? Tu peux m’en mettre cinq contre le dernier P.J. Harvey ?
Je ne sais rien sur Raymonde. Je l’imagine française malgré son très bon accent (British) anglais et son nom de famille (un lien avec Rowland ?) ; et tout ce que j’ai pour mieux la connaître sont ces dix petites chansons d’une folk sauvage enregistrées dans son salon en l’espace d’un an et demi, sur un 4 pistes K7, pour justifier l’appellation lo-fi. Largement suffisant pour me convaincre de son savoir-faire, car avec des petits bouts de mélodie, Raymonde Howard m’a amené faire un tour dans un petit monde où je sais que j’aurai envie de revenir – alors qu’en général, la chronique une fois postée, tu sais où elle va la démo, right ?
L’accompagnement est minimal. Une guitare ou deux, trois touches de clavier, de l’électro lo-tech, basta ! Ce qui s’échappe et qui retient, c’est le chant ou les voix, parce que le plus souvent Raymonde a la bonne idée de les doubler ou de les tripler (merde, on fait comment en concert ?) pour donner à cet enregistrement une énergie assez inattendue. Son petit secret est peut-être là, de s’appuyer sur elle-même. J’ai déjà cité P.J. Harvey et il est vrai que le Dry en version Demonstration pourrait être le fil conducteur du cd gravé, mais là-dedans il y a aussi de la pop lo-fi à la Sentridoh (Jewish Lesbians Folk Singers), un exercice oulipien bizarroïde (One More Comma), une chanson érotique qui me rappelle que dans mes bons jours j’adore les Breeders (X-mas Song), de l’électro-riot-grrrls à la Peaches (Take Off Your Orbits), de la poésie ivre qui fait allusion à Annie Lennox (Chemicals In Need), des spoken words scandés à la façon d’une Lydia Lunch (Talk Shows Host Me), beaucoup d’ingéniosité et une fois de plus une voix qui fait largement mieux que sortir de l’ordinaire.

Cette démo est le premier volet de la collec Polaroïd du label stéphanois et absolument pas lyonnais, Angry Ballerina, et elle est dispo contre 4 ridicules unités de monnaie européenne."

SOUTHERLY

There are few true auteurs in pop music. The closest most so-called pop auteurs come to multi-tasking is mustering a balance between singer and songwriter. Southerly, the nom-de-tune of Krist Krueger is the product of a bona fide DIY visionary. Not only does Krueger sing, write and arrange the music of Southerly, he's a seasoned recording engineer, record label manager and professional booking agent. He remains hands-on in all aspects of his music.

The Portland artist's lush, orchestral pop is reminiscent of The National, Brendan Benson, Richard Ashcroft, Elliott Smith and former Tindersticks frontman Stuart Staples. Krueger recorded the second Southerly album, Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist, with his own full orchestra and horn arrangements. The arrangements flesh out the songs, which center on Krueger's otherwise intimate singing style. Even in his solo performances, you can almost hear the sweeping and swooning violins, horns and backing vocals that surround Krueger's every note.

Southerly's sophomore release is the latest edition in Krueger's catalogue of ornamental and skillfully crafted albums. As with Best Dressed and Expressionless (2004), Krueger's debut, Storyteller plays as an entire album keeping with the tradition of conceptual musical works. Storyteller was recorded in two separate rounds (necessitated by Krueger's rigorous touring schedule) at Haywire Studios in Portland, OR in 2006 and 2007. The release sees the close of 3 1/2 years of full-time touring, both as a solo artist and full band.

Recently dubbed "a one man musical army" by Skratch magazine, Southerly revisits the golden era of lush pop orchestration. His songs include signs of great craft while finding a way to stray far outside the traditional verse/chorus structures often dictating the final product of too many modern artists. Krueger started the project in 2003, tracking songs with a hand-me-down microphone and an Otari four track reel-to-reel in bedrooms and basements, releasing short runs of hand-packaged cassette tapes on his own imprint (dharmakayamusic/DKM). Southerly meddles with both antifolk, rock and alt country roots while taking cues from old-timers like Woody Guthrie, Jimmie Rodgers and Bill Monroe for his gypsy-like touring habits (he's actually even part Hungarian Gypsy.)

Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist features an array of players including Ryan Heise (System and Station, Protest Hill), Cory Gray (Desert City Soundtrack, Laura Gibson) and Ryland Bouchard (The Robot Ate Me). The album was engineered by Robert Bartleson (Wilco, Desert City Soundtrack) and co-produced by Krueger and Bartleson.

In 2006 Southerly became a full band. No longer a solo singer/songwriter project, the band features players from the recordings including Bartleson on bass guitar, Heise on drums and Casey Montgomery on guitar, accordion, organ and more. In July and August of 2006 the band embarked on the Kill Rock Stars' The Sound The Hare Heard Tour in support of the compilation of same name which Southerly appears alongside players such as Sufjan Stevens, Colin Meloy (of The Decemberists) and Laura Veirs.

If there is one word or term that would entirely define Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist and Krist Krueger's writing style, it is not "singer/songwriter," "indie," "folk" or otherwise. It would be that Storyteller is, in its entirety, an "album", from start to finish, over and over again on repeat.

Storyteller and the Gossip Columnist is Southerly's first album for the Portland, OR based Greyday Records, which will be released worldwide on May 15th, 2007. The vinyl version of the album will be released by Olympia, WA based People In A Position To Know Recordings.
